Kids’ Room Collections

Though we serve small humans, we have a large amount of resources for kids from birth through age 99! From board books for babies to parenting books for grown-ups, we're sure to have something for everyone in your house in many different formats. All books in the kids' room are part of the "Juvenile" collection at the library and will have the letter 'j' in the call number and on the spine label identifying each book. Check out our wares below and please ask us for help. We love to connect people with our resources.

Board Books (j BB)
These sturdy books will please parents and babies alike with their thick chunky pages, contrasting imagery for developing eyesight, and short fun rhymes. You can find these books in the play space on the back side of the
kids' room.

Picture Books (j P)
Our large collection of picture books organized by genre to make browsing for your little one's fascination with animals or trucks easy. Our genres include: Animals, Arts, Bedtime, Celebrations, Favorites, Growing, Learning, Nature, Princesses, Stories, and Transportation.

Read-Alongs (j CD/BOOK)
For the independent reader or even the parent who also wants to hear a story, these books have a CD included so your family can listen and read-a-long with a picture book.

Picture Books for Older Readers (j PO)
We have a small but mighty collection of picture books for kids that are a bit older. Books in this collection have more text on the page, making them longer than your standard picture book, and some deal with heavier topics such as war, death, or slavery. Not all of these books are serious! You can also find plenty of fun and enlightening books in this collection.

Easy Readers (j E)
This collection is located to the south of the saltwater tank in front section of the kids' room. Easy Readers are made for kiddos just learning how to read. They include illustrations, with plenty of white space on the page and extra large text. The books are leveled by publishers, but each publisher has a different idea of what defines a level 1, 2, or 3. We can help you get started with the easiest books or find the perfect book for the child looking for something a little more challenging. This collection also features some non-fiction as well as biographies for little researchers.

Young Fiction (j FY)
Located to the north of the saltwater tank are books for kids looking for a chapter book experience, but not quite ready for 200-400 page books. The books vary in font size and page number to give a wide selection for varied reading levels. From the Magic Tree House Series, to Ivy and Bean, and Captain Underpants, we have an awesome collection that will be sure to please your bibliophiles.

Juvenile Fiction (j F)
Our collection of chapter books for elementary-aged children can be found right at the entrance to the kids' area. It's full of classics such as Peter PanHarriet the Spy, The Westing Game, and Roll of Thunder, Hear my Cry. We're also up-to-date on the newest fiction books for children and this year's William Allen White winners and nominees. We love to talk books with families and kids. Ask us for help finding your next read!

Graphic Novels (j GN)
The simplest definition of the graphic novel is "a novel in a comic-strip format", but these books are more than just comic strips. The collection contains brilliant works of art about coming of age, fantastical worlds and adventures, and classic stories told anew such as The Wizard of OzThe Babysitters Club, and A Wrinkle in Time. Some may view these books as not very challenging, but we consider graphic novels as real reading! Most graphic novels have a higher level vocabulary than standard books for the same age range. It also introduces children to art, design, story presentation, and how to "read between the lines" by interpreting text and imagery by studying facial expressions and body language. Let us know if you're new to this format and we can help you find the right book for your preschooler or your middle school student.

World Language Collection (j LANGUAGE)
We have a modest collection of books in other languages for non-English speakers and those wishing to help their foreign language studies by reading books in other languages. The majority of books are in Spanish, but we also have Braille, Chinese, French, German, Russian, and other languages. Books range in format from board books to novels.

Non-Fiction and Biography (j NF and j B)
If factual information is what you desire, we have a large range of non-fiction books and biographies for your needs. Books of strange but true facts, information about the civil rights movement, encyclopedias of animals, drawing instruction books, poetry, history, and biographies all of sorts of important historical figures.

Parenting (j Parenting)
We know parents are busy and may not have much time to browse for books outside of the kids' area, so we have a small collection of books just for parents about being a parent! We also have a small display outside of the Readers' Theater storytime room of great fiction and non-fiction titles for adults that you may have missed while you were busy spending your nights tending to little ones.

Magazines (Children's Magazines)
If you and your kiddos like to read magazines, we have a mighty collection to meet your needs. You'll find titles such as Babybug and Hello for our baby readers and Ask and Kazoo for older kids. Cozy up in a cubby and check out our latest issues!

Non-print Collections (Children's Music CDs, Audiobooks, Non-fiction DVDs, eBooks, and eAudiobooks)
The kids' section of the library also has many different formats to suit your reading, listening, and viewing needs. Need some new music to cruise to with your baby? How about an audiobook for a long car trip? Or maybe you and your family would like to enrich your education by watching DVDs about different countries or all about trucks and tractors?
