Kate

Book Squad Bio attempt #1:
KATE LOVES BOOKS AT LEAST MOST OF THEM PROBABLY NOT ALL OF THEM BUT WHO DOES AMIRITE LOL.

Book Squad Bio attempt #2:
Hi, I’m Kate and my to-read list is as tall as I am. And I’m 6’1” so that’s a lot of books, especially because most of them are 350pgs or fewer.

Book Squad Bio attempt #3:
Kate is made up of 50% books, 20% cheese, 20% cats, and 10% impolite jokes.

Book Squad Bio attempt #4:
Kate Gramlich enjoys long walks to the couch, fine dining at all-you-can-eat buffets, exciting journeys into the beer section at Cork & Barrel on 23rd and Iowa, and the exquisite feel of relaxing while covered almost entirely by her pets. She reads widely, desperately trying not to spill any of the above onto her library books.

Book Squad Bio attempt #5:
Does ANYONE enjoy writing their own bio? Here are too many of my favorite reads:

Speculative Fiction:

  • The Power by Naomi Alderman (Omggggggggggg. Please.)
  • The Book of the Unnamed Midwife by Meg Elison (A feminist Johnny Appleseed, but with contraceptives.)
  • The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet by Becky Chambers (Goofy misfit space crew with lots of interesting social commentary!)
  • The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms by N.K. Jemisin (Ohhh, the world-building! The drama! The sexual tension.)

Historical Fiction:

  • A Tale for the Time Being by Ruth Ozeki (Zen philosophy + culture shock + magical realism? + physics??)
  • Pachinko by Min Jin Lee (I learned SO much about Korean history and had SO many feels.)
  • All My Puny Sorrows by Miriam Toews (The funniest book I’ve ever read about suicide? No. There is no description I can use to explain how much I love this book.)
  • Bad Boy by Elliot Wake (Romantic thriller + coming-of-age novel + one trans man’s personal journey.)

Short Stories:

  • Karma and Other Stories by Rishi Reddi (Beautiful stories of Indian American life. Move over, Jhumpa Lahiri, who is also quite lovely.)
  • Swimmer Among the Stars by Kanishk Tharoor (I gave this book to everyone I could find. The stories are lyrical and extremely impactful.)
  • Love Medicine by Louise Erdrich (Erdrich is a masterful storyteller and I’d start here if you’re new to her books.)
  • Ghost Summer by Tananarive Due (This author combines beautiful emotion with just enough creep-out factor.)

Non-Fiction:

  • A Really Good Day by Ayelet Waldman (I don’t think I will microdose LSD as a mood stabilizer, but this book DID make me consider it briefly.)
  • One Day We’ll Be Dead and None of This Will Matter by Scaachi Koul (Essays that are thought-provoking while being freaking hilarious.)
  • The Soul of an Octopus by Sy Montgomery (Holy cow, octopuses are weird and brilliant!)
  • Being Mortal by Atul Gawande (Legitimately life-changing book. Relevant for anyone who will someday pass on.)
